Cost per share is $15.27. Except Michael which only got 3 gallons. His cost is $9.16. Pale malt=$44.00, Crystal malt=$3.44, Hops=$48.50, Irish moss=$1.34 & propane=$18.76. We settle up at the next meeting.
At 9:30 am we dough-in at 150 degF using 20.25 gals of 172 degF strike water. This resulted in a water to grain ratio of 1.15 qts/lb (20.25 gals of strike water – 4 gals of foundation water / 56.75 lbs of grain) discounting the 4 gals of foundation water.
Ramping mash temperature to 168 degF started at 11:00am.
Sparg started at 11:35am with the mash temperature being 166 degF.
Post-boil efficiency was 82%. 1720 points at end of boil (43 gal at 1.040 SG). Potential of grain bill 2094 points (2.75 lbs crystal at 1.035 and 54 lbs pale malt at 1.037). 1720/2094=.82
Knockout was 38 gals.
The 82% efficiency was all that was required for the recipe. However it was much less than the 89% of the Snow Brew. I believe this caused during dough-in. We managed to snag and pull up the grain bag with the paint mixer. We tried to push the grain bag back into place without removing the mash contents. Later at the end of sparg you could see were a huge channel had developed right were the bag had been snagged.
A bigger mystery is the low knockout volume. Out of 43 gallons post boil at about 212 degF. Reduce by 4% after chilling and we should have 41.28 gals. But we only knocked out 37 gals. I did notice my carboy had about 5.128 gals.
For the Snow Brew post boil volume at 212 degF was 49 gals and we knocked out 47 gals. 4% of 49 gals is 1.96 gals loss for temperature shrinkage. So we lost about 2 gals.
We had one more oz of hops in the Snow Brew so it couldn’t be losses due to hops.
